Paper towel, you live in a world between worlds: neither rag nor tissue nor kerchief; you are both temporary and permanent. You are a tool, a dish, a place to set my drink so I don’t wrinkle up my magazine. I love you paper towel.

Paper towel, as the TP rips to bits when I am cleaning out the ice tray or Kleenex just won’t soak up the orange juice on the couch, you dry a path in my life. When the oil change has gone badly or the cutting board is just out of reach, you offer a clean spot for my apple. Whether it is Cheeto-cheese under my fingernail or dog poo on my shoe or too much sunscreen on my nose, you are there when I need you.

Thanks for being there.

Paper towel, you do so many things well, with your wrinkled, dimpled surface. You are as at home shining my shoes as you are in my ear cleaning out wax. You can pattern a faux-antique dresser project just as well as you can stop a nosebleed. You are a true partner in life, paper towel.

We’ve shared some important, intimate moments, paper towel; ups and downs on this journey of life. Like the other day when my iPhone was in the other room, you and that crayon helped me record my brilliant business idea before I forgot what it was-that was a big day for me. And you were there to wipe away my tears when GoDaddy said that the domain was taken. Thank you paper towel.

When you are spent, and it is time to send you along your way to tissue-towel heaven, I stop and give great thought and deliberation to the life you have lived, what you have been through, and I ask: are you recycle or refuse? Will you burn or are you too soggy with coffee spill and booger?

And when we part, paper towel, it’s with the hope that we will see each other again. Perhaps on a new roll, or rediscovered in my jacket pocket, hopefully before it goes into the laundry.

Until then, thank you, paper towel.
